UM Metro – The Community Service Team (PkM) of the Community Partnership Empowerment scheme (PKM) of Muhammadiyah Metro University which passed the 2023 Kemdikbudristek grant funding held an Android-based Numeracy Literacy Acculturation Workshop for all Muhammadiyah 1 Sekampung Udik Junior High School teachers in East Lampung on Saturday and Sunday (23-24/9/2023).
This PkM program is chaired by Dr. Dwi Rahmawati, M.Pd., who is a Lecturer in Mathematics Education in collaboration with Dr. Rahmad Bustanul Anwar, M.Pd., Lecturer in Mathematics Education, Umi Hartati, M.Pd., Lecturer in History Education, and Mustika, M.Kom., Lecturer in Computer Science. The collaboration of the fields of mathematics education, history and technology is important in order to help schools realize a culture of numeracy literacy at SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Sekampung Udik. In this activity, the culture of literacy is focused on learning, namely through efforts to strengthen teacher competence in developing teaching materials internalized by android-based local wisdom. The activity began with an opening ceremony and continued with the delivery of workshop material by the speakers.
The Head of PkM Dr. Dwi Rahmawati, M.Pd., in her speech revealed that Muhammadiyah 1 Sekampung Udik Junior High School has long been a partner in the implementation of the chess dharma of Higher Education. Furthermore, Dwi said that the activity involved students across disciplines.
“The workshop activities also involve students across fields of science, namely education and technology / IT. This involvement is to support the needs of teacher mentoring activities,” said Dwi when giving a speech.
Dr. Dwi Rahmawati, M.Pd., representing the UM Metro PkM team, thanked the school for the welcome and willingness to cooperate. She also hopes that this activity can strengthen teacher competence so that a culture of literacy is realized in the aspect of learning at school.
Yudi Hermanto, S.Pd., as the Principal of SMP Muhamamdiyah 1 Sekampung Udik expressed the same thing in his speech.
“This activity is an ongoing routine activity. We have long established cooperation with UM Metro. Alhamdulillah, every year our school is facilitated in developing the competence of teachers and students, “said Yudi when giving a speech.
Yudi hopes that this activity can strengthen the competence of teachers at SMP Muhammadiyah Sekampung Udik.
“I hope that the teachers will follow the activities well until completion in order to strengthen your competence in learning so that a culture of literacy is created in schools,” said Yudi.
The workshop activities were held for two days, the first day 3 material presentation delivered by Dr. Dwi Rahmawati, M.P.d. as the first speaker with the title Literacy and Numeracy Acculturation Program at School.
“In the current curriculum, literacy and numeracy are the main content in the assessment and the curriculum itself. The importance of literacy and numeracy culture in schools can help students think rationally, systematically and critically to solve problems and make decisions in various contexts and be ready to face the challenges of the 21st century,” said Dr. Dwi Rahmawati, M.Pd.
Furthermore, Dr. Dwi Rahmawati, M.P.d said that schools can develop literacy through literacy habituation at school, literacy-based learning in class, providing facilities and extracurricular activities related to numeracy literacy.
While Dr. Rahmad Bustanul Anwar, M.Pd., as the second speaker delivered material on Numeracy Literacy integrated learning.
“Numeracy literacy integrated learning has a positive impact on the realization of the fundamental skills of Indonesia’s generation. Therefore, it is necessary to design careful learning. One of them is the selection of learning models such as the PjBL or PBL model,” said Rahmad.
Furthermore, Dr. Rahmad Bustanul Anwar, M.Pd., revealed that the themes presented were sourced from various disciplines, associated with local wisdom and technology. Thus, students’ skills in problem solving are honed.
The third speaker was Umi Hartati, M.Pd., with the title Knowing Local Wisdom in Learning. Local wisdom is a way of life of a community in a certain area regarding the natural environment where they live.
“In the integrated learning process of literacy and numeracy, a teacher can provide examples of local wisdom in the environment where students live so that learning is easier to understand. For example, Lampung tapis with a slope-slope motif has a mathematical concept of geometry, namely triangular flat shapes, Siger which is a symbol of Lampung cultural customs which has nine-notched sharp serrations as a symbol of the Nine Rivers that flow in Lampung, namely Way Semangka, Way Sekampung, Way Seputih, Way Pengubuan, Way Abung Seram, Way Sungkai, Way Kanan, Way Tulang Bawang and Way Mesuji,” he said.
Learning will be more interesting if the learning resources used by students are in the environment close to them and not only fixated on printed books in the school library.
“Apart from Tapis and Siger Lampung which are examples of tangible local wisdom, folk songs; pantun; advice; folklore and beliefs can also be used as examples of intangible local wisdom that can be used as learning resources to improve students’ literacy and numeracy,” he added.
The second day of the workshop was filled by Mustika, M.Kom as a speaker as well as assistance in making android-based teaching materials. Before providing assistance to the teachers, the speaker conveyed the steps in making teaching materials with android applications first. In this activity, the teachers directly practiced how to create teaching materials that could later be accessed digitally via android.
“In this modern era, everything can be accessed through digital, such as teaching materials that can be packaged in android which will make it easier for students to find the learning resources they want,” he said.
The purpose of this service is that teachers of SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Sekampung Udik East Lampung can continue to innovate to create a culture of numeracy literacy in learning that is interesting and relevant to android-based local wisdom, so that learning is not only a task at school but also a meaningful life experience for students.
